AI’s ability to process large real-time data improves decision-making, and drones and unmanned systems enable surveillance, reconnaissance, and combat without risking human lives. This integration of technologies is a top priority for nations worldwide.
South Asia’s geopolitical landscape, characterized by historical rivalries, territorial disputes, and diverse security challenges, holds strategic importance due to its economic and political interests involving major global powers like the United States, China, and Russia. India’s influential yet contested role as a regional power, particularly about Pakistan and China, is shaped by complex security challenges, including border disputes and internal threats from insurgencies and terrorism. To assert its strategic autonomy and maintain regional stability, India is focused on modernizing its military capabilities through the integration of AI and emerging technologies. This technological evolution is critical not only for enhancing military capabilities but also for shaping India’s geopolitical strategies and its global position.

AI-powered systems are revolutionizing surveillance and reconnaissance in the defence sector by analysing data from satellite imagery, drones, and ground sensors to identify anomalies and provide real-time intelligence, enhancing situational awareness and decision-making. In 2021, the Indian Army demonstrated AI’s potential by deploying 75 aerial drones for ISR during the Dakshin Shakti military exercise. The government is pursuing projects to predict atmospheric visibility, analyse imagery, avoid drone collisions, and track ships. AI-application centres at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering in Mhow (Army), INS Valsura (Navy), and Air Force Station Rajokri (Air Force) are integral to these efforts, driving the integration of AI into defence operations and significantly boosting India’s military capabilities.
Autonomous weapons systems, such as unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) and ground robots, are increasingly becoming integral to modern military arsenals due to their ability to execute missions with high precision and minimal human intervention. These platforms can process data, identify targets, and adapt to changing battlefield conditions autonomously. The Indian Army is leveraging AI-based technologies for autonomous combat vehicles and robotics, including remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) with a range of up to 120 kilometres and logistics drones capable of delivering supplies in war zones. These technologies are also used for training, surveillance, cybersecurity, and advanced weaponry. Proponents argue that autonomous weapons systems (LAWS) offer strategic and tactical advantages and are morally preferable to human combatants, reducing human loss and increasing efficiency in rugged terrains. However, critics call for curbing or banning LAWS due to moral and legal concerns, emphasizing issues of accountability and compliance with international humanitarian and human rights laws when lethal force decisions are delegated to algorithms.

AIDSS is designed to cover the full spectrum of operations and administration from unit level to Corps Headquarters and above, utilizing aggregated and processed data visualization to enable informed decision-making across the command chain.

Mitigation Strategies for AI-Related Vulnerabilities
To address these challenges, robust cybersecurity measures and ethical frameworks must be implemented. This includes developing secure AI systems, establishing clear rules for autonomous weapons, and conducting thorough testing to ensure reliability. These diverse drone capabilities significantly enhance India’s military effectiveness across different operational domains.

Drones are crucial for India’s border surveillance, counter-terrorism operations, and humanitarian aid. India uses 140 AI-based surveillance systems along its borders with Pakistan and China, employing technologies like AGNI-D for enhanced security. In counter-terrorism, drones provide real-time intelligence and precision strike capabilities. The Army Training Command is developing WARDEC, a simulation-based training facility using AI and virtual reality. For humanitarian aid, drones assess damage and support rescue operations. AI also enhances Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities by processing vast amounts of data, similar to the U.S. Project Maven, improving effectiveness while reducing risks to human soldiers.

Counter-Drone Measures
The proliferation of drones has led to the development of counter-drone measures, including electronic jamming, laser weapons, and interceptor drones. Implementing effective strategies is crucial for maintaining security and addressing the threat posed by enemy drones.
Emerging Technologies and Their Impact on Defense
Cyber Warfare Capabilities
India’s cyber warfare capabilities are vital for modern military strategies, including offensive and defensive operations. Offensive actions involve attacking enemy networks and infrastructure, while defensive operations focus on safeguarding military networks and detecting threats. Currently, India’s offensive cyber capabilities are perceived as inadequate, especially compared to adversaries like China and potential cyber threats from Pakistan, highlighting the need for enhancement to maintain strategic parity. The integration of cyber capabilities with electronic and kinetic attacks, as seen in strategies of countries like Israel and the United States, underscores the importance of investing in comprehensive cyber strategies. This approach recognizes the evolving nature of warfare, where cyber power is crucial alongside traditional military domains. Cyber warfare can disrupt enemy operations, undermine command and control, and affect critical infrastructure, while robust cybersecurity measures are essential for defence and operational integrity.
Quantum Computing
Quantum computing has transformative implications for encryption, data security, and military communications. Its rapid problem-solving capabilities threaten existing encryption methods, necessitating quantum-resistant algorithms. India is proactively establishing itself as a key player in this field with the National Mission on Quantum Technologies and Applications (NM-QTA), aiming to foster indigenous research and innovation. Progress includes DRDO’s work in quantum key distribution (QKD) technology and the establishment of quantum computing labs for military use. To counter potential quantum superiority from adversaries like China, India must enhance risk awareness, pursue strategic collaborations, and accelerate network securitization. Leveraging quantum technologies for ultra-secure communications and data analysis will strengthen India’s intelligence capabilities and strategic position. Success depends on fostering a robust ecosystem of academia, research institutions, and private stakeholders, and engaging in international partnerships.
